GIM and GRIP

The 7th Annual ‘Girls in the Middle’ conference and 2nd Annual 'Guys Reaching Incredible Potential' conference will take place on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Trinidad State Junior College from 9 am – 3 pm. GIM and GRIP are for the purpose of exposing students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to Science, Math, Technology, Engineering and Technical Education careers. Students will participate in 1 large morning workshop presented by the Air Force Academy and 3 smaller workshops. In addition to the workshops, the day includes breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.  We have some AMAZING workshop presenters this year.   We know that the students are going to have a fabulous time with all the hands-on activities the presenters have planned.

Students must pre-register for this event. There is a $5 registration fee. Registration opens Wednesday, March 7, 2018 and is open to the first 120 girls and 100 boys who register. Be quick to send in your students’ registration packets (registration form, registration fee, and photo waiver) when registration opens March 7, 2018 to get your students signed up for the event.   You can access the forms on our website http://trinidadstate.edu/gim-grip/ . Students are not guaranteed both interest categories he/she marks on the form.  However, we will try to place them in a workshop that matches one of their interest areas.

We will be accepting student and adult registrations via fax 719-846-5050 and email erin.comden@trinidadstate.edu, or drop off the registration packets to Laura Gowen at the TSJC campus in Berg 210. iFly

The second annual iFly indoor skydiving field trip was a huge success! Nearly thirty students from 7th through 12th grade participated. The trip included an interactive math and physics lesson where students learned about the forces acting on an object in free fall, as well as the effects of an object's shape and its frontal area inside the wind tunnel. Students also participated in a safety class to learn how to "fly" safely and read hand signals from the flight instructors. We took turns in the flight tunnel and did a science lab about our experience. Thank you to everyone who participated, and we hope to see you back again next year!

Check out pictures from our awesome day below!

Taurid Meteor Shower

Are you looking for a fun and unique experience this week? Head outside on Wednesday or Thursday night, November 11th or 12th, and do a little star gazing!

The Taurid meteor shower is expected to peak on these evenings. This also coincides with a new moon, meaning the skies will be nice and dark, making for excellent meteor viewing conditions!

When viewing a meteor shower, the most important factors are patience and location. A little help from the weather doesn't hurt either!

Choose a clear night and get away from the city lights. Look straight up and give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. If possible, lay down or recline in a comfortable chair. A couple of blankets and a warm beverage are probably a great idea at this time of year as well. Once you are warm and comfortable, relax and wait. Enjoy the beautiful view while you wait for meteors to streak across the sky.
