Students
had a blast learning how to use science, technology, engineering
and math to solve problems and improve peoples' lives at our annual
indoor skydiving field trip at iFLY, Denver. STEM concepts ranged from
geometry to fluid dynamics and everyone got a chance to indoor
skydive in the wind tunnel!

iFly 2018
The
third annual iFly indoor skydiving field trip was a ton of fun and a great
learning experience! Over twenty students from 7th through 12th grade
participated. Students participated in an interactive math and physics lesson. They learned about the forces acting on an object in free fall, as well as the effects of
an object's shape and its frontal area inside the wind tunnel. Instructors
"flew" different objects in the tunnel to demonstrate, including free
falling water- it was very cool! They then had a safety class to learn how to
"fly" inside the wind tunnel and read hand signals from the flight
instructors. Then students took turns in the flight tunnel simulating
skydiving. They wrapped up with a math lab about their experience. Thank you to
everyone who participated and we hope to see you back again next year!

GIM and GRIP
The 7th Annual ‘Girls in
the Middle’ conference and 2nd Annual 'Guys Reaching Incredible Potential'
conference will take place on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Trinidad State Junior
College from 9 am – 3 pm. GIM and GRIP are for the purpose of exposing students
in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to Science, Math, Technology, Engineering and
Technical Education careers. Students will participate in 1 large morning
workshop presented by the Air Force Academy and 3 smaller workshops. In
addition to the workshops, the day includes breakfast, lunch, and a
t-shirt. We have some AMAZING workshop presenters this year.
We know that the students are going to have a fabulous time with all the
hands-on activities the presenters have planned.
Students must pre-register for this event. There is a $5 registration fee. Registration opens Wednesday, March 7, 2018 and is open to the first 120 girls and 100 boys who register. Be quick to send in your students’ registration packets (registration form, registration fee, and photo waiver) when registration opens March 7, 2018 to get your students signed up for the event. You can access the forms on our website http://trinidadstate.edu/gim-grip/ . Students are not guaranteed both interest categories he/she marks on the form. However, we will try to place them in a workshop that matches one of their interest areas.
We will be accepting student and adult registrations via fax 719-846-5050 and email erin.comden@trinidadstate.edu, or drop off the registration packets to Laura Gowen at the TSJC campus in Berg 210. You can also mail them to TSJC Attn. Laura Gowen, Box 335, 600 Prospect St. Trinidad, CO 81082. Please mail or drop off your registration fees for students ($5) and adults ($5) to Laura as well. Checks can be made to TSJC with Girls in Middle in the Memo line.
Please contact Erin Comden with questions.
